Lens know-how
You’ll experience our 75-year optical heritage in every Canon lens.
Our name is synonymous with imaging innovation and we
continually evolve ever-more compact optics that produce
ever-greater clarity and sharpness.
The lenses in Canon’s digital compact cameras share many of the
same design and manufacturing processes that are used to develop
our professional broadcast and EF lens range. A range trusted by
millions of professionals around the world.

Advanced performance optics
From Canon’s first 50x zoom of the PowerShot SX50 HS to the f/1.8
aperture of the PowerShot G15, Canon’s advanced performance range
represents the very best in compact lens technology and quality.
The use of special lens materials such as UA (Ultra high refractive index
Aspherical) and UD (Ultra low Dispersion) lenses contribute significantly
to size reduction and higher performance of Canon’s compact cameras,
enabling compactness without compromising on image quality. Each
camera benefits from having a fixed retractable lens with a practical
zoom range that’s ideal for capturing a range of subjects.
Focus and zoom mechanisms are also continuously evolving. For the
PowerShot G15, Canon developed a focusing-lens unit that shifts
independently. By further optimising the mechanism and AF
algorithm, the focusing drive speed is approximately 6.3-times faster
than the PowerShot G12 to create accurate AF which is the fastest in
Canon history*
PowerShot G and S series cameras have an optical 3-stop ND filter
built into the lens so you can shoot using wider apertures in bright
light or achieve a slower shutter speed – to capture the movement of
water seascapes for example – giving you real range of creative
freedom and expression.
A clear vision
Each camera includes a highly effective optical Image Stabilizer (IS)
to combat blur from camera shake. It uses tiny vibration gyros to
detect camera movements, and shifts an optical element in the lens
to counteract the movement of the camera - by up to 4.5-stops in the
PowerShot SX50 HS. In effect, this means you can shoot at a shutter
speed 4.5-stops slower than would otherwise be necessary to obtain
a sharp shot.
Each model includes Intelligent IS which selects the best IS mode to
correct different types of camera shake. For example, all models
feature Hybrid IS: a technology first used in the Canon EF 100mm
f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens to correct the vertical ‘shift-shake’, which
most likely occurs during Macro photography at close distances.
Alternatively, when using the zoom while shooting movies, Powered IS
corrects exaggerated movements that can occur when using the full
extent of the zoom.
